Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for Xbox 360 is another spin-off installment of the popular survival horror series. This time around, Capcom decided to entrust its franchise to Slant Six Games, the creators of the SOCOM series.
Plot
The action takes place in 1998 and is strongly connected to the second and third installment of the series. In the game, we assume the role of Umbrella Security Services (USS) agents, enemies of the characters that we controlled in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The developers of Operation Raccon City presented a tripartite conflict between the USS, the USA special forces, and biologically modified monsters created by Umbrella, represented primarily by hordes of zombies.
Luckily, a good knowledge of the series is not necessary to enjoy the game’s story since Operation Raccon City introduces new characters and only reminds us the events of the past. The title takes us to the locations known from the second and third major installment of the franchise. We will also meet characters that appeared in them. What’s interesting, the developers of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City allow us not only to interact with them but also to change the story of Resident Evil.
Mechanics
The title, contrary to the main series, a team shooter in which our primary task is to eliminate all remains of Umbrella’s experiments with the t-Virus. In combat, the players receive experience points that can be spent on new abilities and weapons. The USS squad consists of several agents that can be chosen before every missions. It is important to remember that these characters have completely different skills and fighting styles.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for Xbox 360 offers the possibility of playing the campaign solo or in cooperation mode for up to four players (sadly, only online). It also features several interesting multiplayer modes that let us fight other participants as well as the zombies that roam the map. One of the more pleasant gameplay variants allows us to assume the role of famous Resident Evil characters and repel attacks of AI-controlled enemies.
The game’s graphics are surely noteworthy since they are a comeback to the roots of the series. The atmosphere of Operation Raccoon City is dark and grim. The title also features tens of various collectibles that provide us with experience points or allow us to get trophies/achievements.
